This page will contain assigned homework and suggested problems. 

Suggested problems are questions that a student should be able to answer, but are not part of homework to be handed in for grading. 

The assigned and suggested problems include two types of questions.

1.  some that are the basis of good test questions

2.   some that are closer to dealing with real world questions involving several steps and so are not good test questions.

In case you have difficulty finding the data for problem 8.10.3 it is given in the file Data 8.10.3 It is an ASCII text file, so you can open it with text editor or read it into R with read.table

March 5, 2018 : a3-2018.pdf the due date will be announced later since a number of students have midterms in various courses. As announced in class on Monday and Wednesday March 19 and 21, the due date is Friday March 23, 2018.

April 4, 2018 : a5-2018 Note 8.10.4 d should be 8.10.4 (e). Also in Q3 the prior you will use in the last part is proportional to sin(pi*p) I( 0<= p <= 1), and not

sin(2*pi*p) I( 0<= p <= 1) as in the original version of this question. The corrected assignment is posted.


Below are the assigned questions from Jan – April 2017, in case a student wants to see what is likely to be included in assigned problems. The 2018 problems are to be announced soon.

Jan 20, 2017 :  a1-2017.pdf  This assignment has some problems to hand in and also suggested problems.

February 1, 2017 :  Sugg2.pdf   This file will be updated with some additional suggested problems in the next couple of days.

February 10, 2017 :  a2-2017.pdf  This also includes some suggested problems.  The tentative due date is next Friday.

     R script file for simulation of a 2 state Markov chain and calculation of the sufficient statistics   MC-MLE.r

    Whales data for 8.10.46  whales.txt   This data is in a text file.    It can be read into R using read.table

    The material needed for the assignment has been covered, so the due date will remain Feb 17, 2017.

For the assignment the bootstrap method refers to the parametric bootstrap.  R has some programs called bootstrap, but these refer to the non-parametric bootstrap, which will be discussed later in the course.  R does not have a parametric bootstrap, so this needs to be coded by the student.

March 1, 2017 :  a3-2017.pdf   The due date will be posted here at a later time.  The assignment will be due in about 2 weeks.   At the end of the assignment are some suggested problems.  Assignment 3 now has a due date of March 15, 2017.   Assignments are due at the beginning of the lecture.
