May 6, 2014, Dr. Charmaine Dean announced Matt Davison’s appointment as Chair of the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences starting July 1, 2014, for a term of five years. Matt Davison is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Quantitative Finance.  Professor Davison received his BASc in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto, specializing in Engineering Geophysics; and his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Western in 1995.  Prior to working at Western, he worked at Deutsche Bank (1997-1999) and as a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physiology at the University of Bern (1995-1997).

Professor Davison’s career embodies interdisciplinarity with research interests including the optimal control of energy assets, pricing options on carbon markets, the economic analysis of green energy sources and of the stability of reinsurance markets, quantitative risk management, pricing and hedging options, and applied operations research in areas ranging from cancer treatment optimization to the detection of naval mines.

As Chair, Professor Davison will build on the collegial environment within Western’s Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences and on cordial relationships with other Western departments and faculties to capture and advance on innovative research and teaching opportunities in Actuarial Science, Financial Modelling, and Statistics.  He is excited to maintain existing and explore new links with colleagues in government and industry to share our increasingly relevant expertise not only inside but also outside the University.
