Probability

Class Times: Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 –10:00 p.m. WSC 240

Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 2:30-3.30 p.m. or by appointment.

Prerequisites: A minimum grade of "C" in one of Calculus 050a/b plus either 051a/b or 081 a/b, or Applied Mathematics 026. Please Note: Since September 2001, this course is a program requirement for every program in Statistics, Actuarial Science, or involving Statistics or Actuarial Science with another discipline. It is also a requirement for many Applied Mathematics programs.

Textbook: A First Course in Probability, (6th ed.), by Sheldon Ross (Prentice Hall).

Course Objective: The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of probability, probability models, and its applications through numerous examples.

Course Description: Elementary probability and its axioms, conditional probability and independence, random variables and their distributions, moments and moment generating functions, sums of independent random variables, law of large numbers, central limit theorem.

Topics Covered in the Textbook:

Evaluation: The final grade will be comprised of 50% for the final exam, 30% for the midterm, and 20% for 4 assignments. Class participation will be considered in assessing final grades, and may result in up to a 2% bonus in certain situations.

Attendance: The Department views classroom attendance as a very important part of the learning process. Students are advised that excessive absenteeism may result in the student being debarred from the final examination.
